Carroll County, MD has a long and storied history. Carroll County, MD was created from parts of Baltimore county and Frederick county in 1837 during the civil war. The county was divided between confederate and union supporters. Carroll county was named after Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Business has been an important part of the county since its foundation. Computers were invented in the 1950’s, and the world wide web was created in the 1970’s. So, what did businesses do before computers and the internet? Documents were made by typewriters, records were kept in cabinets, accounting was done by hand, pictures and graphs were hand-drawn, and research was done in books.
Today, there are around 4,460 businesses in Carroll County, Maryland. Computers and the internet are essential in the business community in this age. With computers, communication, productivity, and record keeping is made easier. In the 21st century, having a website is vital to helping a business grow and gain customers. Clients now expect to be able to reach a business via email. Accessibility and back-ups of data is also fundamental to business operations. Years ago, businesses likely kept all of their files in a file cabinet. If something were to happen to that file cabinet, their business would fall into jeopardy.
